Sandy is one of the founding partners at Motdang. After graduating from Art School in 1991, Sandy started work in Covent Garden, London with Workhouse, a breakaway agency run by Chris Vane, creator of the award winning Channel 4 identity. After travelling in South East Asia and Australia for 18 months Sandy returned in 1995 to London to form Blue Dog Design in Leicester Square.
Working mostly in PR related activities with Cohn & Wolfe, Burson-Marsteller and Y&R for their global brands, Blue Dog went from strength to strength and soon had a team of thirty creatives. In 2003, Sandy was approached by Chelsea FC managing director to help reposition the football clubs brand and create a new identity.
In 2004, the club launched the new badge and branding to wide acclaim from the fans, staff, players and media. The following year the team won the league title for the first time in 50 years. The rest is history.
Sandy moved back to his roots in Scotland when he and his wife started a young family and in 2007 he sold Blue Dog to other directors. He then opened Greybridge Design and also went into the hospitality industry.
Together with his Thai wife Bee, they opened Nahm-Jim in St Andrews winning the accolade of Best Thai UK by the Synday Times in 2008 and in 2010 the best Thai restaurant in the UK in Gordon Ramsay’s television competition show – Ramsay’s Best Restaurant.
Between the years 2007-14 Sandy also played golf at the highest level and competed in several Asian Tour and Thai Singha Tour events, getting his development tour card in 2013. However, the combination of being both short and crooked off the tee was not a cocktail for success!
Sandy continued to work in design mostly for sports organisations and golf companies both in the UK and Asia. Having formed a long standing friendship with Thongchai Jaidee, Sandy designed TJ’s golf brand and restaurant identity.
With the children all grown up and studying Sandy and former Blue Dog partner and close friend Patrick McAteer decided to ‘get the band back together’ and formed Motdang in 2018 working with associates in London, Bangkok, Bali & Perth (WA).
Sandy still likes to hack a wee white ball around but is mostly seen tapping keyboards and helping his clients get better and more successful.
